Education was once about uplifting, inspiring, and liberating the mind and soul. But the last 100 years of education in The West has seen it embrace what was traditionally known as a “servile education” model. Otherwise known as:
The Education of Slaves.
In contrast, Aletheian Academy is a Christian educational platform. We exist so that students may read the great books of the West, learn to think, and grow in wisdom and virtue.
As a platform anchored in the Christian faith, we take that faith as true, the Western inheritance as a gift, and the formation of free, capable human beings as our work.
The name aletheia is the Greek word for truth, not “my truth,” and not the slogan of the hour, but what is so. We believe that objective truth exists, that God is its source, and that it is the foundation of all that works in the world, be it science, mathematics, music, architecture, art, and philosophy.
This page is our public account of that work. We publish it so that families, tutors, and anyone considering a place here will know what they are joining.
Why we exist
A civilization is neither a casual arrangement nor a permanent guarantee. It is a long and fragile labor: family, worship, law, letters, science, industry, and the willingness to defend it all. The West, formed by Athens, Rome, and Jerusalem, and carried forward by Christian Europe and the English-speaking peoples, has given the world an inheritance almost no one now living could have invented: the dignity of the person, the rule of law, freedom of speech and worship, the university and the hospital, modern science, widespread prosperity, the abolition of chattel slavery, and the conviction that truth may be sought and spoken.
That inheritance is not automatic. It is taught, or it dies. Much of contemporary schooling treats the West as a stain to be managed and the student as a client to be placated. We do the opposite. We want the West to reach its greatest height: morally, religiously, intellectually, economically, and, when required, in its strength to defend itself, the innocent, and the virtuous.
We do this the old way: a tutor, a student, a pen, and a serious book.
What we believe
I. God and the faith
- There is one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. Jesus Christ is His only Son, our Lord, true God and true man, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; who rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. The Holy Spirit is the giver of life, comfort, help, and truth. We hold to the faith of the Apostles as the traditional creeds and the Holy Scriptures confess it.
- Holy Scripture is the inspired Word of God and the final written authority for Christian faith and life.
- All people are made in the image of God, and therefore possess a dignity no state, school, or mob may cancel. All people are fallen, and therefore need grace, repentance, and the formation of virtue to reach the fullness of their God-given potential.
- We are non-denominational. We do not require tutors or families to be Roman Catholic, Protestant, or Eastern Orthodox. We do require that those who teach here can, in good conscience, affirm this statement and teach within it. Disputes that divide the historic churches (orders, sacraments, polity) are not our curriculum, and we will not make them a test of fellowship here.
II. The human person and the moral law
- God made mankind male and female. Sex is a bodily fact, not an identity to be chosen or a feeling to be medically or socially reconstructed. We will not teach otherwise, and we will not require anyone here to speak as if it were otherwise. Our hearts feel for those who struggle in this way; and we strive, where possible, to help them find and know God's unimaginable love for them, wherever they are in their journey.
- Marriage is the covenant of one man and one woman. The family (father, mother, and children, where God gives them) is the first school and should be the foundational unit that society orients to. We honor parents as the primary educators of their children and those ultimately responsible for the raising and nurturing of those children.
- Moral law is not a social construct. Courage, honesty, chastity, industry, piety, and justice are real virtues. Their contraries are real vices, regardless of what majorities may believe or how they vote. Education that cannot say so is not education.
- As children of the same God, every nation and every person stands under the same moral law. We reject racial hatred and racial preference. We will not practice them, and we will not promote them as justice.
III. Truth, speech, and the school
- As stated above, truth is objective, with God as its source. Truth is not limited to theology only, but to every aspect of nature and human endeavor. It is discovered, not invented. And our ability to learn and harness truth is what enables us to build wonders of architecture, engineering, art, music, philosophy, and science. A student is not asked first “how does this make you feel?” but “is this true?” The crowning goal and purpose of education is to discover, then guide others into the truth as best we know it.
- Free inquiry is the path to discovering truth, and requires free speech. We will not punish a student or a tutor for a good-faith argument. We will not adopt compelled speech, loyalty oaths to contemporary ideologies, or the habit of treating disagreement as harm.
- Classical education is the trained love of what is true, good, and beautiful, through the classical arts and the great books. We teach grammar, logic, rhetoric, and the mathematical arts; we read Homer and Plato, Scripture and Augustine, Euclid and Newton, Shakespeare and the American founders, not as relics, and not as the accused, but as teachers.
IV. The West
- Western civilization is our civilizational home. We are grateful for it. We intend to conserve it and to see it excel: in holiness and public morals; in letters and science; in widely achieved prosperity; in lawful self-government; and in the military strength sufficient to deter and, if necessary, defeat those who would destroy a free people.
- Gratitude is not blindness. The West has sinned, as every people has sinned. The proper response is repentance and repair, not the demolition of the only civilization that ever made repentance a public habit and repair a legal one.
- What now calls itself “progressive” in the schools too often means the opposite of progress, while hiding behind words of compassion, tolerance, freedom, and love: the rejection of the sexed body, the weakening of the family, the glorification of mental and physical illness, the suspicion of excellence, the racial sorting of persons, the policing of speech, the obsession with using government force, and contempt for the religion and the country that has done more good for the average and lowly persons than any other civilization known to man. We are not that. We are traditional Christians and unashamed citizens of the West.
Whom we serve
Students and families of any background are welcome to learn here, provided they will respect the character and charter of the Academy and the work of the classroom. We do not require a student to be a Christian in order to read Plato with us. We do require that no one use this platform as a means to undermine what this page states.
Parents remain the authorities in their homes. We are their hired help in a particular kind of education, not a replacement for them.
Whom we hire
Aletheian Academy is a Christian educational platform. Those who teach, lead, or represent us are not vendors of a neutral skill. They are asked to form the young in a definite tradition.
Therefore:
- We hire tutors, staff, and contractors who can sincerely affirm this statement and who will teach and conduct themselves in accordance with it.
- We prefer, and where the law permits we require, that those who teach here be Christians who love the Western civilization this Academy exists to transmit.
- We will not hire a person to teach against our faith, our moral teaching, or our civilizational purpose.
- Agreement with this page is a condition of applying, of remaining on the faculty, and of using the Aletheian name.
An applicant who cannot affirm this statement should not apply.
How we behave
Beliefs that don't change our conduct are not beliefs at all.
- We tell the truth as best we know it in the texts and in our dealings.
- We keep our word to families and to tutors.
- We protect children. We do not sexualize them, catechize them in adult identity contests, or hide material facts from their parents.
- We pursue excellence without apology.
- We honor lawful, constitutional authority and the duty of free people to defend their homes and their country.
Tutors on this platform are expected to keep these standards in sessions, in messages, and in any public representation of their work with us.
How we expect students and tutors to behave
A school is a company of people under authority, not a media feed and not a help desk. The books we read were written by men and women who assumed that the young owe honor to their teachers and that teachers owe honor to the parents who entrusted them. We assume the same.
Authority
Parents are the first teachers of their children. A tutor is hired help in a particular art. He does not replace a father or a mother, does not keep secrets from them about their child, and does not set the household’s religion, politics, or medical judgments against them. If a tutor cannot work with a parent’s lawful authority, he should decline the booking.
In the hour itself, the tutor leads. The student is there to be taught. Questions and discussion are welcome and encouraged; contempt, bargaining, and the habit of treating the tutor as a contractor who must please the customer are not. A parent who remains in the room is a guest of the lesson, not a second instructor, unless the tutor has asked for help.
While adult students are under no parent, they are still under the text and under the tutor they hired. They do not get to rewrite the session because they are paying.
Manners worthy of the tradition
We are trying to recover a great and noble civilization, and our conduct should be worthy of it.
- Arrive on time, on camera, dressed as you would for a serious appointment, not as for bed, the gym, or a joke. Sit up. Look at the person speaking.
- Do the reading. A session is not a summary service for a book you meant to open.
- Put the phone away. Close the other tabs. The hour is not background noise.
- Speak so as to be understood: clearly, without mumbling, without performing for an audience that is not in the room.
- Address people courteously. Disagreement is expected. Eye-rolling, mockery, name-calling, and slang used to diminish the other person are not.
- Receive correction without theater. Give correction without humiliation.
- Do not record, clip, or post a session except as the platform and both parties have allowed.
- In a group, wait your turn. Do not talk over the tutor or use the seminar to hold court.
A child who cannot yet keep all of this is being formed. A child or adult who refuses it, and a parent who will not back the tutor, should find another school.
Honesty
Students do their own work. They do not submit a machine’s paragraph or another person’s translation as if it were theirs. Tutors do not pad hours, feign expertise, or flatter a student in place of a judgment.
If you do not know, say so. That is a classical habit.
The tutor’s side
Tutors owe students a prepared hour, a steady temper, and the truth about the work. They owe parents a plain account of how the student is doing. They do not use the intimacy of a lesson to recruit a student to a private cause, a private confidence, or a private relationship. They keep the conversation in the text and in the craft.
Tutors treat other tutors as colleagues in one academy, for we are all united in the common defense and building of The West.
When this is broken
A single lapse is a word in private. A pattern is a parting of ways. We will not keep a booking in which the student will not be taught, the tutor will not teach, or the parent will not allow teaching to happen.
A last word
Classical Western Civilization has done more for the bettering of the average person's life and soul than any other civilization known to man. It is our heritage, and we should be proud of it. We are not interested in being fashionable. We are not interested in managed decline and deconstruction. We are interested in being true, and in leaving our students and The West stronger than we found them, able to read a hard book, keep a promise, build something that lasts, found a family, worship God without embarrassment, and, if the time comes, stand their ground.
